10 Bible Verses About Glorifying God

According to God’s Word, our lives glorify God when his light and love shine through us, transforming our everyday places.  Here are 10 Bible verses about living for the glory of God.

Bible Verses About Glorifying God in our Everyday Places

1. 1 Corinthians 1031, ESV

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

This verse reminds us to keep God at the forefront of our minds.  Everything we do, even the most basic daily tasks, can glorify God when we do them for him.

2. Colossians 3:17

And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

In addition to doing everything for God’s glory, we are to thank God through Jesus as we undertake these endeavors.  Gratitude always gives God glory.

3. 1 Corinthians 6:20

For you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

Paul wrote this verse about sexual sin, but honoring God with our bodies goes far beyond sexuality.

Our bodies are not our own.  God calls us to be good stewards of our bodies, caring for them as temples of the Holy Spirit.  Sleeping, eating, and moving for good health are ways to honoring God with our bodies.

4. 1 Peter 4:11

Whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

We should remember that our speech and actions are meant to honor and glorify God.  We belong to Jesus, and we are children of the light.

5. Matthew 5:16

In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

God’s light shines through us as we carry his love into the world.  We glorify him by loving others, especially those who are different than us.

6. Ephesians 2:10

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

God has prepared good works for each of his children.  We are to step into these good works with willing, surrendered hearts.  This brings glory and honor to God.

7. Revelation 14:7

And he said with a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come, and worship him who made heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water.”

The book of Revelation offers many descriptions of heaven and shows us how to glorify God.  We were made to worship him in all we do.  When our everyday actions become acts of worship and adoration, God receives glory.

8. Philippians 1:9-11

And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

Living with righteousness and obedience brings God glory on earth.  May we remember this in moments of temptation.

9. 1 Peter 4:16

Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name.

When we aren’t ashamed of our calling as Christians, we glorify God with our lives.  God wants us to boldly and lovingly proclaim his truth to the world.

10. John 17:4

I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do.

Jesus prayed these words to the Father before his crucifixion.  We can rest in the assurance that we have brought God glory by accomplishing the work set before us.

Let’s now take some time to apply these Bible verses about glorifying God to our everyday moments.  Let’s make it very practical.  I invite you to join me in the woods with my kids, and we’ll talk about how to live this out.

Apply These Bible Verses About Glorifying God to Our Lives

I’m on my knees with my camera lens inches from a dwarf ginseng.  As I watch its tiny snowflake head bob in the breeze, I suddenly realize we’re not alone.

“Beautiful day, isn’t it?” an elderly gentleman asks.

“Sure is,” I answer, somewhat embarrassed by the black dirt on my knees and elbows.

“Did you see the trout lilies?” he asks, and I notice the camera strapped over his neck.  I’m less embarrassed.

We talk for a few minutes about trillium and bluebells, and he finally meanders off along the path. Returning to the ginseng, I remember the way I once looked at thirty-somethings with cameras and wildflower books.

In my twenties, I kept track of miles logged and elevations reached, not dwarf flora like violets and ginseng.  I lived for big moments, summit moments.  The thought of bending low to relish life’s small moments seemed like a waste of time.

I reflect on this as we walk farther down the trail.  The kids sprint ahead in search of toads, and I consider the change of seasons and reflect on where I’ve been.

How Do We Glorify God in Our Daily Lives?

I remember the day I started taking pictures of tiny mushrooms and sphagnum moss.

Life changed at that moment.  Something shifted.  For the first time in a long time, I wasn’t in a hurry.  I had no desire to prove anything to anyone, including myself.

I consider this shift as we continue down the trail.

What if we could all live like we have nothing to prove?

Perhaps we’d find the freedom to slow down and give thanks for the small and hidden moments of our lives.  Perhaps this slower way of living is a secret for giving God glory in our daily lives.

Maybe there really are no small moments.  Maybe there are only hidden moments that are wrapped in wonder, just waiting to be unveiled and embraced.

I ponder it while the kids build castles along the sandy creek, and I’m sure of it: These quiet moments of walking with children in the woods, baking cornbread, folding tiny T-shirts, and wiping down dusty furniture are the moments that will make up the bulk of our lives.

Every now and then, perhaps we should all pause to ask whether we’re enjoying these hidden moments.

10 Bible Verses About Glorifying GodThe hidden moments might feel small, but they’re the ones that comprise the essence of our lives.  Perhaps learning to embrace these moments is a secret for glorifying God.

As I sit along the water, I begin considering additional ways to give God glory.

1. We glorify God when we live thankfully.

Sitting along the water, I commit to living with more gratitude.

I commit to recognizing the gifts that surround me and magnifying God by naming them: dwarf ginseng, blue phlox, garlic mustard, and wild geranium.

Some of us are so busy chasing our big dreams that we’ve forgotten how to give thanks for soap suds in the kitchen sink, the warmth of clean laundry on our laps, and smiles from the children in our lives.  Imagine the shift we might see if we decided to keep track of the gifts.

2. We glorify God by speaking life.

Speaking life is more than just encouraging others.  It’s encouraging ourselves.

I tend to fall into a horrible trap of feeling sorry for myself in life’s small and hidden moments.  This often happens when the hidden moment requires me to work.  On my hands and knees cleaning up the third bowl of spilled cereal of the evening, it’s easy to grumble.

However, I’m learning not to grumble in these moments.  Instead, I think of a friend who lost her child in a tragic accident, and I remember her words: “I’d give anything for one more day of cleaning up her messes.”

How do we glorify God in our daily lives? The words we speak to others matter greatly.  Equally important, the words we speak to ourselves can change the trajectory of our lives.

3. We honor the Lord by living intentionally.

As I sit in the morning sunshine along the quiet waters, I decide to live intentionally. I decide to shift away from autopilot and aim to “be all there” in the middle of my actual life.

I role-play with the kids the whole way home from the creek. Life slows.

At home, we turn off the TV and play with toys on the living room floor.

When the sun sinks low that evening, Bekah and I put together a pocket guide of wildflowers from our walk. We find Latin names and study the history of each plant.  It all feels a bit small, but when she looks at me with dancing blue eyes, filled wild with life and passion, I know for sure that none of this day was small at all.

I’m passionate about equipping others to encounter God in powerful and life-changing ways. When I’m not writing, you’ll find me hiking, jogging, exploring wild places with my three young children and husband, leading small groups, and mentoring younger women. A certified special education teacher, I am on leave from the classroom for a season of chasing frogs and playing in creeks with my little ones. Most of all, the compassionate love of Jesus has forever ravished my heart, and I'm emphatic about making his love known to the world.
