Overcoming Trials

5 Powerful Bible Verses for Overcoming Fear and Worry

It gnaws on my anxious heart like an enemy who lurks in dark places. I stare it down in the early morning hours and pray for my unraveling thoughts to settle.  My memorized list of Bible verses for overcoming fear is far from my mind, and I am alone in the darkness.

I hear this is when most of the faithful women face their deepest fears: under the cover of darkness.

We face fears about everything from what will happen if the job falls through to what we’ll do if the scan reports a tumor.

How do you overcome your fear when the circumstance you prayed against is on the brink of becoming your reality?

Powerful Bible Verses for Overcoming Fear

I sit with these questions as dawn leaks through the spruce trees, and I do the only thing I know to do. I seek the heart of the One who holds my world together.  I open the thin pages of the Book with the words of life, and I write the Truths that are meant to push out the fear:

Bible truth to stand on when your future is uncertain and you need God's promises to cling to1. You can trust the One who knows how this will turn out.

Throughout the darkest and most uncertain seasons of my life, the most profound truth for my trembling heart was this: All of the days ordained for my life were written before I was even born (see Psalm 139:16).

We haven’t seen how our lives will play out, but God knows all things.

He is outside of time.

All of our days are written before we are born on this earth.

This truth doesn’t release us from the responsibility to make wise decisions; instead, it is a promise filled with reassurance.  We don’t need to fret over what will happen with our jobs, our kids, our friendships, our pregnancies, or our diseases. It is already written.  God has it.  We can rest in these truths.

2. God cannot be anything other than good.

I used to wonder why certain Psalms repeated the phrase, “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His lovingkindness endures forever” (see Psalm 136 and 107).

While there are many reasons for this repetition, one reason is that we need ongoing reminders that God is loving all the time, even when we don’t understand what he is doing.

The original language uses the word hesed for lovingkindness. Hesed denotes love in action.  God is love in action, all the time, even when we don’t understand. (If you’re struggling to understand why God is allowing pain in your life, join me right here for insight.)

3. God cannot be anything other than love.

We often hear the reminder that “God is love” (1 John 4:8).

Let’s not allow the familiarity of these words to numb us to their truth.

Because God is love, everything he does is love.

His discipline is love.

His promise to walk with us through difficult times is love.

We can face uncertain tomorrows because Love is a Person, and He walks with us into the unknown.

4. Remember that God works all things for the good of his children.

This truism is easy to say on the mountaintops but difficult to believe in the valleys.

It’s hard to see how disease, trouble, persecution, or even death can be used for good.  Romans 8:29 reminds us that God’s ultimate idea of what is “good” is very different from our ideas . . .

5. God’s idea of “good” is exceedingly better than my idea of what is “good.”

According to Romans 8:29, God’s idea of “good” is that trouble will shape us to the image of Jesus.

This is ultimate goodness.

What surprises me most about this truth is the tenderness with which God shapes us.

Trouble and pain come, but for those who believe in his name, he is the tender Father who walks beside us. And so we put our hope not in improved circumstances, but in the truth that he will never leave us.

Trouble and pain come, but for those who believe on his name, he is the tender Father who walks beside us. #paininlife #Godwithus #Godinsuffering #hopeinChrist #encounteringGod Click To Tweet

As we continue forward with hearts and minds fixed on what is true, we trust that it is all part of a bigger plan that is about love and goodness, and we allow that love and goodness to drive out the fear that comes in the darkness.

We don’t know what will happen, but God does, and God is always good, always love.

I’m passionate about equipping others to encounter God in powerful and life-changing ways. When I’m not writing, you’ll find me hiking, jogging, exploring wild places with my three young children and husband, leading small groups, and mentoring younger women. A certified special education teacher, I am on leave from the classroom for a season of chasing frogs and playing in creeks with my little ones. Most of all, the compassionate love of Jesus has forever ravished my heart, and I'm emphatic about making his love known to the world.
