Overcoming Trials

5 Powerful Prayers for Strength When You Feel Weak

The poplar bows low like the weight of heavy sky has become too much to hold.  I watch from the window with an empathetic heart, the weight of everything I feel like I need to carry bending me low in unseen parts of me.  I’m praying prayers for strength, but I’m so bogged down that I wonder if God even hears.

Perhaps you can relate.

If you feel weary and need guidance as you pray prayers of strength, these prayers are for you.

5 Prayers for Strength

Pray these prayers for strength as you continue to follow the One who carries your burdens for you.

1. “Lord, thank you that when I am weak, you are strong.”

“Lord God, thank you that when I feel weak, you are strong.  Please work in my life to reveal your perfect power in my weakest and most broken moments.  I eagerly look to you.  Amen.”

We find this prayer for strength in 2 Corinthians 12:9, which reads, “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me” (NIV).

2. “Lord, thank you for giving me everything I need to live the life you have set before me.”

“Father God, you have promised that your divine power has given me everything I need for godliness.  I look to you and receive your strength in my weakness.  Thank you for being my Protector, Provider, Strength, and Shield.  Amen.”

Second Peter 1:3 offers this reminder: “His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.”

3. “Lord, thank you for being my Strength, Song, and Salvation.”

“Jesus, thank you for taking the punishment for my sins when you died on the cross.  Your love for me amazes me.  Thank you, also, for continuing to deliver me.  Thank you for being my strength, my song, and my salvation.  Amen.”

Psalm 118:4 leads us to thank God for the following promise: “The LORD is my strength and my song, and He has become my salvation.”

4. “Lord, thank you that nothing is too hard for you.”

“God, when life is difficult for me, I cling to the promise that nothing is too hard for you.  No situation is beyond your control.  Nothing is so far gone that it cannot be redeemed and made new by you.  I trust you to carry my burdens and work in my life.  Amen.”

Jeremiah 32:17 reminds us: “Ah, Sovereign LORD, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.”

5. “Lord, please fill me with the joy you experience when we spend time together.”

“Father, you have promised that your joy will be my strength.  I take a moment to close my eyes and soak in your joy right now.  Your heart overflows with joy when we spend time together.  Help me to experience your joy so that it might give me strength.  Amen.”

Nehemiah 8:10 reminds us that the joy of the Lord is our strength.  Perhaps the most powerful way to find strength in difficult times is to learn to bask in God’s joy.

God is delighted when we spend time with him.

For this reason, I begin each day with several minutes spent sitting in a quiet place, closing my eyes, and focusing my thoughts on the joy God experiences when I spend time with him.  Like a good Father smiling upon his precious child, I sense God’s pleasure.  His pleasure gives me the strength to endure whatever is ahead of me.

Nehemiah 8:10 reminds us that the joy of the Lord is our strength. Perhaps the most powerful way to find strength in difficult times is to learn to bask in God's joy. #Godsjoy #joy #strength Click To Tweet

Final Insight on Prayers for Strength in Tough Times:

Not long ago, I reached the end of my rope.  I was pretty sure I was going to go flying into the clear blue sky if someone didn’t catch me.

Do you know what I found at the end of my rope?

Jesus.

He was still with me.

All along, he had been inviting me to stop trying to endure in my strength.  He was waiting to make his power perfect in my weakness.  He wasn’t waiting for me to fail and mocking me.  Instead, he was waiting to catch me and carry me forward in his strength.

Go ahead and let your clenched fists slide to the end of your rope.

Put your trust and faith in Jesus, and you will find him at the end of your rope.  He didn’t ask you to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders.

Let him carry you today.  He will do all the heavy lifting, and he will be your strength.prayers for strength

I’m passionate about equipping others to encounter God in powerful and life-changing ways. When I’m not writing, you’ll find me hiking, jogging, exploring wild places with my three young children and husband, leading small groups, and mentoring younger women. A certified special education teacher, I am on leave from the classroom for a season of chasing frogs and playing in creeks with my little ones. Most of all, the compassionate love of Jesus has forever ravished my heart, and I'm emphatic about making his love known to the world.
